EVEN

The repeated nut stomping is over (temporarily). I has climbed out of my downswing, maybe my bills will be paid this month after all.

The total freefall damage done was -$7392, 18.5 buyins which ties the most "buyins" lost downswing but since that was at 200NL, this was doubly bad.

It was a tough road crawling back but I had evidence that most of my losses were due to ridiculously bad luck and not bad play. Ok some bad play, fuck off, I dropped $5k in one day, give me a break.

There was also a point where I crawled back a decent amount (3-4kish) then obviously dropped right back down to ground zero. It was super disheartening and actually pushed my frail psyche into a new dimension of pain. But I didn't have much choice other than to keep playing and forgetting the past.

And now, here I stand, victorious.

The graph:

Coming back from downswings definitely makes you a better player as you are forced to reevaluate your game. Its unlikely that I was doing something wrong, but its very hard to keep thinking that when the losses keep coming. Recovery from it is one of the best feelings in poker.

And on a different note, I've been wanting to make a bunch of small changes in my life for a long time. Things like eating better, getting more exercise, standard shit. Most of the time these thoughts enter and leave my mind within the timespan of a 1 poker hand, but I think I've done something that will hopefully be a bit more effective.

I decided to make a list with a point system of all the things I want to improve on in my life. Every time I do something on the list, I get a "point". At the end of the week I tally up all the points and record them in a spreadsheet. I will be able to track my progress from week to week and eventually be able to make a uber l33t graph.

And in order to keep the incentive strong my girlfriend along with some other friends of mine decided to do the same, and make a weekly competition out of it. If nothing else, just having other people aware of the things I want to improve will give me a bit more motivation to do them.

Heres my list:

Lift Weights
Elliptical > 20 minutes
Clean a room thoroughly
Take a shower
Goto bed before 1am
Eat daily breakfast
No chocolate during week (5 points)
Eat 1 piece of fruit
Read a book (5 points)
Tidy all used dishes in a day
Do an outdoor activity (5 points)
Do something creative (5 points)
Drink 4 cups of water / day
Work over 6 hours
Eat a daily salad
Take vitamins
Talk to Christine for an hour without distraction
Improve the house in someway (5 points)
Don't eat after 9pm
Sleep no more than 8 hours
Find a new musical artist that you enjoy
Lose 2 pounds (5 points)
Try a new food
Clean an unusual item
Eat at a fast food restaurant (negative points)

I'm still working out the point system for achieving each item. Ultimately I would like to have each item on the list rewarded equally to its inherent difficulty and personal reward for doing it. I wouldn't want something as trivial as taking a shower to be worth the same amount of points as working out daily because then I would just cheat and only shower to get mad points. Yes, I'm that pathetic.

This system will start next week, and if it works for me, my life will forever be changed. Heres hoping.

Monday, February 18, 2008

Well it had to happen someday

Monday February 18th is now officially my worst day ever.

I lost $5.5k in 4k hands

fun times

Not gonna post much about it since I'm obviously pissed off, but one thing I will say is that I do believe I played as good as could be expected given the insane amount of ridiculousness I had to deal with today.

Now I'm going to post 15 hands. These are 15 sets I hit today. Notice how much action I got with them. Don't worry it won't take too long to read and it is actually pretty comical. Keep in mind all these hands happened in ONE day.

And here is my pokerEV graph. This analyzes all the hands I went all in with and determines my equity in them. For example if I got all in with AA vs someones KK preflop I will have 80% equity (0.80x$400=$320 in equity). So it looks at all the hands I went all in with and calculates the total equity I had which is represented by the red line. The blue line is what actually happened. As you can see I ran $3,750 below equity or what I will run in the long run.

Pretty sick.

In 25 hands

heres the video equivalent of how bad i played today

Wednesday: Avoiding Tilt

I managed to play a decent amount in one sitting today - 1,655 hands. My brain was fried so I had to stop and I'm not sure if I'll play more tonight but for now I'll write this.

In case you are wondering, 1600 hands takes me about 3 hours to play. It may not seem like a lot but concentrating to your fullest capacity for that long is a huge strain on the mind. At least my lazy mind.

My high water mark today was around $1k. My low water mark was -$550, so it was a fun swingy day. I ended up at $610.04, a respectable amount considering the beats I took.

Updated stats:
4184 Hands @ 400NL: $1470.48
2243 Hands @ 100NL: $333.50
6427 Hands: $1803.98

I don't think I'll get my 10k goal since I forgot that valentines day was this week and I obviously can't work much that day. Oh and I'm lazy.

I lost two massive pots that should have set me off the deep end but somehow I serenity now'd myself and kept on keepin' on. Here are the two pots in question:

That 2nd pot was fucking ridiculous. Who calls with AK there? What could I possibly have that AK beats? And up to this point this dude had been tight as a mother fucker, and I almost considered folding the flop (lol).

But it didn't send me off. And not even QQ vs AA and KK vs AA all in preflop with both losing tilted me. Huge swings but standard gay shit that can't be avoided. At least thats what I keep telling myself.

I also played two sick hands where I value bet super thin and I got called. Pretty proud of myself for these.

Tuesday: Business as Usual

I managed to play only 1,280 hands today. Obviously I suck at life.

Coinciding with my poker goals this week, I also had a goal to get back on track sleep wise. For the past few weeks I had been going to bed progressively later, until it reached a head where I woke up at 6pm last week. Something had to be done.

So I decided that I would goto bed 1.5 hours earlier each night, and in turn wake up 1.5 hours earlier in the day. Sofar its worked out ok, as I've got my wakeup time down to 3pm from 6pm, but I still have a long way to go. Ultimately I want to be getting up at 8am so I can live a normal regular life, and also so I can work during the day and do stuff with the wife at night and not feel guilty about working (or not working).

So needless to say I've been tired in doing this, as its not real easy for me to force myself to goto sleep, especially when the internets exist. And when I'm tired, I play bad, and hence, 1,280 hands today.

I still managed to pocket $784.01 which isn't half bad considering I played like a retarded donkey. Thank god for running good.

SO the totals sofar are:
2604 Hands @ 400NL: $860.44
2243 Hands @ 100NL: $333.50
4847 Hands: $1193.94

Heres a hand I played like a complete asshole:

Seat 4: natzz88 ( $649.10 USD )
Seat 5: kaimachek ( $181.90 USD )

I'm so good at poker sometimes it scares me.

I had recently taken a lot of pots away from this guy and I figured he would be apt to bluff me, so I obviously go into "cant fold" mode even though he is probably ripe to try and make a big call versus me. Regardless I make a "stand" with my KQo in position preflop, and decide rather than raise the flop as a bluff, I'd call and bet any turn when he obviously gives up. Once I hit my K things completely changed. I no longer needed to "bluff", but he kept betting. Now what? Would he really double barrel AK or is he just representing it? I mean, he can't expect me to call since I clearly don't have a king the way the action went.

I'm all in

SNAP CALL LOLZ AK OWNZ U

gg poker.

I swear to god if I don't play 3k hands tommorow I'll eat someones shit - 1 guy 1 cup.

Heres my new office chair, best of both worlds imo:

Monday: The unbeatable fish

Holy shit today was insane.

I ended up playing about 1.4k hands at 400NL, and won a pitiful $75. Then the games dried up and I decided to try my hand at some 100NL heads up on stars.

Worst.

Decision.

Ever.

Out of all the forms of poker in existence, heads-up is by far my least experienced game. I'm not aggressive by nature and its taken me a long time to learn how to be aggressive enough to beat the 6-max games, but heads up is a completely different bitch.

So I load up 3 tables, and of course, they are all insta-filled by retarded short stacking donks with $20 each, just looking to double up. So I take their collective $60 and move on to full stacked opponents. Here it got fun.

So I get matched up with a bevy of terrible players and proceed to take their monies with ease. Within an hour I'm up like $400 (4 buyins!) and feeling good about my game. Then disaster strikes.

A random player named "bigdaddynab" sits down at my table with a full stack. I proceed to pwn the shit out of him and get him down to around $20 within 10 minutes. "The end is near" I think as I continue to pound his ass into the ground. This hand looked to be the end.

Jesus tittyfucking christ.

What made matters worse was this player was fucking horrible. Obviously. I mean one of the worst players I've ever seen. Super passive, never bluffs, and NEVER STOPS FLOPPING THE NUTS.

I started playing him at midnight and because im a phycho spaz who needs to win this match I continued to play him until 5am - a total of 1200+ hands with just him alone. I knew it was just a matter of time where his check calling ass wouldn't let go of 2nd pair and I'd get his stack but it just wasn't happening. Whats worse is he would check / fold the flop for like 500 hands in a row, then the hand I finally get 2 pair or something, he obviously has a better 2 pair. And since I had been so super aggressive and making him fold so often, I just couldn't give his actions any credit since he could easily have been just getting annoyed.

But no.

Every... single... fucking... time... he has the nuts.

Miraculously, I get him down to $30 again, thanks largely to this:

What a huge waste of time. Fuck heads up.

Here is my poker EV graph for the entire session

TO those unfamiliar, the green line are my total winnings. The blue line are my winnings when I went to showdown, and the red line represents what I should have won at showdown. If you understand that then you can realize that I bluffed a LOT to get my green line way way way above my blue line. What it also shows you is that I ran very badly - obviously.

At the end of the day (and this ridiculously long post) my totals are:

1324 hands of 400NL played: $76.43 won
2243 hands of 100NL (HU) played: $333.50 won

3567 total hands played: $409.93 won

Aka a marathon by my standards. I'm off to bed.

Back on the wagon

I'm just posting to get me back in the game.

I've played for a grand total of like 10 hours in the past 2 weeks and that is ridiculous. So this upcoming week my goal is 10k hands - nothing unreasonable but also more than my usual average. Also included in this goal is winning and not losing.

I wonder what is more likely, me playing 10k hands and winning, or me playing less than 10k hands and losing. I'd say the former but its definitely pretty close.

I think one of the biggest fears I have when taking a week+ long break is not being able to get back in the groove easily and losing a lot within the first few hours. When I've been playing for a long time I loosen up a lot and make a lot of risky yet profitable plays. Playing a tight nitty game is just not that profitable, and its also boring. One thing about playing a little reckless is that it definitely keeps the game interesting and your mind active, and in turn leads to more play and more profits.

I think I may even keep a daily log of each long session talking about a few key hands. Stay tuned!

Or not, fuck you.

And heres a vid to pass the time - it made my hands sweat just watching it

Fuck Eli Manning

When the Pats picked up Randy Moss, Wes Welker, Adalius Thomas, Dante Stallworth, Sammy Morris and resigned Asante Samuel in the offseason last year, I knew something special was about to happen in Boston.

When they won their first game 38-14 against the Jets - a game that was a lot closer on paper than it was if you watched it - the first thing I thought of was "holy shit they are going to go 19-0". They kept rolling on and each Sunday became the highlight of my week - with the anticipation of each game increasing exponentially as they approached perfection.

But then last night happened.

By far the biggest game I've ever witnessed, and conversely - the biggest upset of my lifetime.

What I can't help but thinking is that if they had to do it all over again, would I rather they lose somewhere in the regular season and win the Superbowl or go out like they did last night? I mean to go 18-0 and lose the bowl is almost identical to final tabling a MTT as the chip leader the whole way and losing heads up (to Eli fucking Manning).

But regardless of the outcome, the 2007 season is one I'll never forget. If they had lost to the Colts, Eagles, Baltimore, etc during the regular season then went on to win the Superbowl, it would have been great, but thats been done before. Thats the 2004 Pats, where they played well throughout the season then dominated the playoffs. I've been through that. Its fun; but this was better.

And knowing that it is ridiculously unlikely that any team ever again will approach perfection, I guess I have to take solace in the fact that I was apart of something special, even including the loss last night.

There were many things that went awry in last nights game, but probably the most disappointing thing is that the Pats beat themselves. I would probably be more willing to accept the loss if Eli went 28/34 345 yards 4 td's 0 int's but that wasn't the case. Neither team played that great and the game came down to who made less mistakes. I don't know who was playing QB for the Pats last night but it wasn't the God among men that had played the whole season. Although I do have to admit that the Giants pass rush was off the charts last night, probably knocking Brady down more than he had been knocked down all season accumulatively. And yet, I was never even considering that they would actually lose the game. With 36 seconds and 3 time outs on their own 15 I was still confident they were winning. Not until Brady threw the final pass on 4th and 20 did I think it was over. If you watched them play this year you know what I mean. During every close game you almost felt that they had it all under control, almost toying with their opponents at times.

So while Eli's ridiculous 3rd and 5 scramble and toss up will probably go down as the best play in Superbowl history, I'll always remember it as the only sports moment that truly broke my heart.

And while I'm depressed now, I guess thats why we watch sports, since there are very few things on earth that can make us feel such euphoric highs and lows. I just hope I'll be on the opposite side of the emotion scale in the future since this was an all time low.
