Party sucks (obvious)

So the worst poker site on the internet (party poker) has been experiencing increased amounts of software related issues the past few weeks. Apparently, when multitabling, certain action buttons (ie call, raise, fold) disappear at random, making it, umm, quite hard to play. Now while Party's software has sucked huge dick since day one, it's never been this bad. For a company with a multi-BILLION dollar revenue stream, clearly this is beyond unacceptable.

Now, the question is, why do I care?

Well, these problems are lighting up the 2+2 forums. For weeks, multitablers simply couldn't play and many, like myself, they play poker for a living. Because of this, there is a lot of talk about players switching to Poker Stars. That is why I care.

You see, in the SNG world, there are essentially only 2 places to play. Stars and Party. Suprisingly, most 2+2'ers play on Party, due mostly to their rakeback program, but also due to higher volume of players (especially at higher buy-ins) and quicker games. There are still a lot of multitablers who play on Stars full time, but the majority play on Party. Now, since Party is fucked, the multitablers who played there are now coming over to Stars to play. Keep in mind, these are mostly all strong players (especially at the $60+ level). Because this problem only affects multitablers, the regular 1-tabling fish who we (multitablers) make our money off of won't even consider leaving party because in their mind nothing has changed. Whats going to happen is there is going to be a large influx of players populating the SNGs at Stars, all of whom are above-average in skill level, which is clearly shitty.

It's beyond a joke that Party would ever let this happen. I mean, are they seriously making that much economic profit that their software can remain buggy as all hell without them caring? It truly is strange.

So, we'll see how this next month goes. I imagine a lot of players will remain at Party regardless, waiting out for the eventual bug fix, but there will definitely be those "irrational" players who will make the immediate switch. And who knows, maybe when they get used to Stars, they'll realize its a better place to play and become a lifer.

This got me thinking that perhaps I should consider moving back to cash games. I mean, in the long run, cash games are where the money is at. My only fear with that is that because I haven't played cash games in so long, my game will have deteriorated so much so that perhaps the damage is irrecoverable. Pushbot styles are so simple and easy that I've forgotten what poker actually is.

Enjoy the ride

I have this weird feeling that the biggest downswing / breakeven stretch is approaching. I can’t say that I’ve been running amazing, but I’ve definitely been turning a profit. Throughout the month, after reviewing games, there are just so many times that I could have easily lost, yet the right cards came. Obviously that is the whole thing about SNGs, and putting myself on the good side of all ins is pretty much my job, but being only a 55% favorite clearly adds a lot of variance to the equation.

Downswings are inevitable. I know that. I havn’t had one for a while. And despite what I know about probability and independent trials, I still feel I’m due. When a downswing starts, at first you ignore it. It’s just a random blip on the variance radar. Tommorow will be a winning day. Then more losses come. You start to consider that you aren’t playing the same. You start considering things in your life that may have caused you to play bad. Am I playing tired? Hungry? You start doing irrational things like making sure to only play during certain hours of the day, or try to invent a system of joining games in which you have a larger edge over the competition than usual. Meanwhile your brain forgets that for months you’ve been winning without considering any externalities. Your game begins to suffer even more. You keep telling yourself that you are playing the same, but are unconsciously avoiding high risk situations and continue to see bad results. Your confidence is destroyed. You feel that any move you make will be caught and every time you make the right move, your opponent will suckout. Your bad-play becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy, and until you realize that your game has changed, you probably won’t return to glory.

But because the optimum play isn’t always clear in SNGs, you can review your games and justify each and every play. And even though each play may be justified in some way, it isn’t your normal play - the normal confident play that you make when you are running normal.

So how do you get out of a downswing? Well the easy answer is to maintain your confidence and continue on as if nothing has happened. Don’t let some bad run of luck effect your decisions. Standard shit. If in blackjack you hit on 16 25 times in a row when the dealer is showing 7+ and lose, you aren’t going to start standing, hoping for the best. You understand probability. You understand the optimal +EV play. You just need to be mentally stable enough to ignore the results and keep on keepin’ on. A good poker player is one who can take emotion and results out of their game. It’s something every decent player has trained themselves to do on a microcosmic level. Don’t let that suckout affect your play for the rest of the session. We all know that. Now we just need to transfer that thought process to a higher level. Each hand, tournament, session, day, week, month and year are all independent of each other. Just ignore losses.

When that downswing comes next week for me, I hope I can actually do some of these things and not freak the fuck out.

Good Times

I woke up early today (8am!), logged on to Stars and to my surprise there were like 3-60 games going on in total, which basically means I can't play. So I decided to watch some of my recently purchased DVDs. I started with American History X and followed it up with Freddy Got Fingered. I didn't plan it that way, but damn, you even if you wanted to, you couldn't pick two more opposite fucking movies in the world to watch back to back. And yet, I was equally entertained by both. Continuing with movies for a second, I also saw M.Night Shamalalala's new movie, "Lady in the Water". Horrible. No joke; the worst movie I've ever seen. Laughingly bad. I can't even describe how bad it was because no movie is even in the same league of suckage as this pile of shit. I know some of you will still see it despite this review because you can't imagine it being that bad, and hey, Sixth Sense was decent. But just trust me. I would recommend a porno starting my own grandmother and an eel before I would recommend this. It's utterly confusing, contrived, stupid, pointless, forced, and humourless where humour is clearly intended. You'll still see it.

I've also been putting off a post for a bit since I had some really fucking weird swollen finger problem that was driving me nuts that actually made it difficult to type. It started when I was playing Soccer and I think I may have been stung by a bee, not sure. Whatever the fuck it was, it's still not fully gone.

On the poker scene - when it rains it pours. I can't think of many times where I've been cruising along at a normal ROI for an extended period of time. I'm seemingly always on a 50% ROI heater or a -75% ROI shitkicking. Take a look at a few days from earlier in the week.

As you see, I made a quick $1200 in 20 games, then went on to lose most of it within 20 more. Then of course, by some miracle I make it all back in about 15 more games. Trust me this is fun to deal with. And since I've been having so much fun with my new graphing program, here is a graph of this months activities.

So yea, I'd like the time from about 250 games back, but other than that, it's shaping up to be a good month indeed. I've had a great progression to the 114s sofar, with about a 30% ROI at them over 50 games or so. Definitely a nice way to start a new level. As I wrote before, I am not able to completely move up to them for regular 6-8 tabling duties because they don't fill up fast enough, so I'm still playing the 60s mixed in. I thought this may be a problem as I would lose concentration by thinking about which table is which. But sofar I haven't noticed at all. I think I'm actually becoming more immune to swings, which definitely helps when mixing in buy-ins.

Since the 114s are the last hope for true multitabling at Stars, I'm not sure what I'll do if I ever feel that I'm ready to move up to a $200 level. God help me if I even consider moving to Party Poker.

Anna Kournikova - looks good, never wins

All is well in SNG land. I took the weekend+1 off to drink, sweat and be merry. I also went to Canada's Wonderland and dropped a cool $200 on probabbly just food since my girlfriend doesn't like rides. Went back to work today and scored a nice $450 win in just 2 sets.

I've been thinking about this hand for a while, so I thought I would post it. Generally most hands aren't that interesting because you are playing against random donks and you don't have any room to make any "moves" because they cheerfully call you down with K high anyways. The main difference in this hand is that the player in question is a SNG regular, and posts often on 2+2. Basically anyone who multitables these things and posts on 2+2 comes to the same understanding about how to play certain hands that I do. In that regards they are very easy to play against as you can count on them not to bluff or get out of line. When they raise early game you can put them on a very narrow range of hands. Since there really arn't that many 2+2'ers who play the 60s on stars, there usually arn't that many clashes between them and I, so I generally ignore them. Anyways, here is the hand in question.

Ok what do you think? Pretty ugly right? Ok lets analyze this.

As stated, when a solid multitabler (herein known as SMT) raises in the first few levels, you can put them on a range of about 8 hands (probabbly something like TT-AA, AQs-AK). You will never ever see a SMT raise with KJ, 77, ATs or other marginal hands. This early it just isn't worth it to fuck around with these trash hands when you have limited concentration as well as an abundance of donks willing to push with 2nd pair this early.

Assuming we call and not reraise preflop every time, what is the optimal way to play this flop? We've hit top pair here, which is fine and dandy. But now we are faced with a bet. Basically any SMT will continuation bet this flop no matter what he has (even a set). If we assume him to have one of the 8 previously listed hands, we are now beating 3 and tying 2 of 8. The remaining 3 (TT, KK, AA) are crushing us. So this is a classic situation of being way ahead or way behind with the off chance of a split pot (if he has AK).

Now, if we are way ahead, my raise will get him to fold for sure. But do I necessarily want that? I mean, I do have top pair here. If we are way behind, we'll get what happened and they'll push and we can fold.

The trouble of course is determining which side of the fence we are on here. At the time I figured the best way to determine this was to raise. Now I'm not so sure.

By raising I'm essentially turning my hand from AK to 23o since it has no showdown value if I'm planning on folding to an all in. Even when he folds I wouldn't say that is necessarily a good result as he is only folding way way way worse hands. Hands in which I shouldn't fear a draw out and may get him to put more chips in the pot with a smooth call. Since I know he doesn't have trash like KQ or J9, I can slow play this hand because I know at best he is drawing to 2 outs.

By calling I can keep the pot small for when I'm behind, and allow him to put more money in the pot when I'm ahead. In the case where he has AK he will most likely slow down by at least the river if not the turn and the hand will be over and chopped. If he has a set or aces, he'll continue to fire and it is that situation where I'll have to make the tough decision. I don't imagine any SMT firing three bullets as a bluff against me, unless they just have a hard-on to out play me, so I can basically rule that out. I also don't imagine a SMT firing three bets with just AK or even AA here, since most players would be too cautious to get all in with just one pair this early. Obviously deciding to call a big turn bet would be the toughest part of the hand if it had occured that way, and thats why I originally went for the flop raise, to get more info in case he did continue to be aggressive.

All in all, an interesting hand. Too bad I never got to see what he had, as I have a wierd suspicion that he had AK. But most smart SMT's play sets the exact same way as well, so it's tough to say.

Rollin... rollin... rollin...

The last few days have been fairly uneventful as far as big scores go. I've been all over the place the last 3 days. Each day has been a complete roller coaster. Yesterday I started up $500, then I actually managed to lose it all to be -$200, then finally I made it back for a profit of $250. Today, I started -$500, wanted to die etc, then after hours of grinding, made it back for a tiny profit of $200. So I'm still winning, but it's not coming easy.

I commenced my delayed leap to the $114s last night, with 2 wins out of 3 games played. I played 6 more today with little sucess. Obviously a sample size of 9 tells me jack shit all, but I can't see them being all that different than the $60s, other than the larger scale of variance of course. The other problem is I won't be able to play the 119s exclusively as I had hoped as during most of the hours that I play, the games just don't start fast enough to have 6-8 up at a relatively similar state. I'll either have to mix in some 60s or start to play continous. I throw up a little in my mouth thinking about both of those options, but honestly, self, grow a sack and just fucking do it.

I'm constantly thinking about interesting and/or entertaining posts to make while playing but after I'm done my mind is always pure pushbotted mush and I can't even spell my own name half the time, let alone remember what they were. I do have some strategy posts in mind, but honestly, I can't really think of much to write about these days. I mean, I do the same exact same thing every day. And while there is some "skill" to what I do, there isn't much. Honestly, it's not hard. It takes a while to learn, but once you learn it, it almost seems as their is a ceiling for skill and improvement. The best advice I could ever give someone is to be a pussy. Stop trying to outplay people. Stop bluffing, start folding. Just push with 10bb, and you can't lose! The manliest thing I do each day is fold my way into the money.

I'll remember some of the posts I've thought of someday. But in the meantime, I'll post the final 30 or so hands from a game I played today that was particularily interesting. Just keep an eye on the chip stacks. Enjoy!

Nothing to see here...

I’ve been chugging along as usual this month, on pace for another standard 5k. I mean, I can’t complain but it can be annoying to see the potential to make so much more, yet fall short every time. I’ve been a pretty good boy as far as playing time goes, averaging 37.6 games/day, with an ROI of 14.5%. I guess it’s nice to be taking in exactly what I should be, with not too many huge up or downswings to deal with for once.

It never surprises me how bad people play at the 60s. I guess it just says a lot about people in general. They like to gambool. They don’t take the conservative route and start at the $6 games and work their way up once their bankroll allows. No, they deposit $600, play 10 games, win one and lose 9, rinse and repeat. They have no concept of long term ROI. They just play for fun, to do something challenging and relaxing. The money has to be meaningful for them or it won’t matter. And hey, I’d be stupid not to take advantage of their ignorance.

Probably the biggest trend that is plaguing me these days is the limp-call all in late game. It generally happens when I have between 6-10BB and I have a hand like 88+, AT+ and there is a loose limper in front of me. I’ll push overtop of them and they’ll cheerfully call with their low pocket pair or their KQo. This play by them is obviously –EV, but the fact that they are so willing to call with their trash forces me to tighten up my pushing standards. But it becomes so temping to push since their limp adds an additional BB to the pot, which adds to my overall EV for a push. I suppose I should welcome a coinflip if the pot is laying me better than even odds for my money, but when you lose those limp-call coinflips, it is a pain heard ‘round the world. These donkeys just don’t realize how bad of a play they are making by doing this. If they would at least raise, they would add so much EV to their move. Now it puts the decision on me. Do I want to reraise with ATs now? Probabbly not, and they’ll take the pot right there. Why put yourself in coinflip scenarios at best?

Anyways, I’ll stop beating that horse.

On a final note, I received my books I ordered from Amazon yesterday. Its definitely one of lifes simple pleasures receiving something you ordered off the internet. I’m halfway through DoubleAs book, and I’ve skimmed through Maddox’s and it looks fantastically-shit-kicking awesome. I also ordered Tucker Max’s book, which is basically just a compliation of his stories on the internet, and of course Harrington on Hold’Em Vol. 3, which should be another great read.

Alright, I gotta get back to work. And by work I mean assembling the ridiculous amounts of shit my girlfriend and I bought from IKEA yesterday. Although it can be tedious at times, there is a certain sense of satisfaction after finishing a unit.

Damn I wish my life was more interesting.

Up, down, UP, dowwwn, up?

Cyanide and Happiness, a daily webcomic

Alright I’m having a decent day sofar, up $750. I decided to take this opportunity
to let that win settle a bit before donking it away and unleashing the tilt which lives within.

After yesterday’s debacle, I decided to start up a tilt account where I would play nothing but $6 and $3 SNGs and play as many fucking tables as I could manage. I appropriately named the account “PushBot1000”. At first I tried 20, with a loss of $30, so I tamed it down to 12, with another loss of $30. So then it got me thinking, maybe I actually do suck and have just been running hot for a year. I mean, a professional like me should be able to decimate the $3 fucking game right? For a while I even had a fish icon on sharkscope, which made me laugh quite heartily. Overall I’d say it was a positive experience.

Alright so I’ve been saving a bunch of hands for a while now that I thought were interesting or played well and since I’m trying to avoid playing poker I thought why not post them here, comment on them and create a 14 page post that two people might skim over. I’ll even do it in that sexy green writing style that I used for my last super hand history post that no one saw.

This one combines the absolute pussiocity that my game obtains, as well as the donk-tastic play that the average $60 player has.

No clue why I didn’t reraise preflop, but honestly, is there anyone who would think that QQ is good after a min-raise followed by another min-raise against 2 complete strangers?

This ones interestingness begins and ends with my fold. Honestly, what the fuck do you do with AQ here with an early position limper and 15bb? I distinctly remember laughing out loud when I folded simply due to the ridiculousness of AQ. Maybe I should limp? I really have no clue.

I found this interesting because I figured there was no possibility that no one had AA. It actually took me a good 15 seconds to shove because I was seriously afraid of AA. I mean, what hand justifies min-raising a min-raiser who raised a raiser who raised a limper? Yea…

This hand, I don’t know. Obviously flopping quads doesn’t happen very often, and since no one else has a 5, whenever I raise they will be scared that I have trips. I mean, how do you get any value out of this at all? I actually think the best way to do it is just to bet out on the flop, hope someone has A8, 67 or something and is ready to go to war. Any sneaky check-raises or reraises are going to look a lot stronger than just betting out.

This is just another hand I would have had trouble folding before. It has become an easy fold for me, especially when in the BB. I mean, against your average donk who will reraise preflop from the SB, what am I beating here? Do I even want to see an ace or king on the flop?

This just happened 2 days ago but is definitely one of my all time favorites. I especially enjoy the 100 bet my opponent made on the flop. Like, what the fuck is that supposed to mean?

Before you wonder what the fuck, I mis-click reraised this preflop; one of the perils of multitabling. You can usually spot mis-click reraises as they are generally extremely quick and are always the minimum raise. The best part of course, is that I flopped an oesd and since I took the lead preflop, hey, why not take it down?

I’m pretty damn proud of myself on this hand as well. I thought I was pretty happy with that flop, but since no one reraised, I started to imagine I was actually being fucking trapped when I had trip jacks with an ace kicker. I seriously doubt anyone could lose less on this hand than me, other than if they folded preflop, but for 30 more, come on. Also you just have to love how this was AA vs KK and somehow they didn’t get all in preflop. Nice 50 smooth call with KK dumbass.

Alright, that’s all I got. If anyone made it, congrats, I hope you were entertained, and maybe even learned something. Off to a night of avoiding breaking my winning day. Wish me luck.

A pictorial tribute to my last 2 days

Started off promising and on the up and up...

And at the end of today....

GG to 2 completely wasted days of zero income and an impressive -21% ROI despite a record setting 100 games played.

Play more, make more?

Alright, it’s time to start kicking some mother fucking ass.

Back from a shroomtastic long weekend camping trip. There aren’t many better things on the planet than spending a weekend away with your buddies, playing sports, drinking and talking shit the whole way. Certainly poker isn’t in the same league, but I digress.

I hadn’t played any online poker since last Wednesday, and therefore ended the month of June effectively on that date. Despite dominating for the first 15 days of the month, I ended up with a pretty average month. Here are my end of the month results:

Cash Games: 4.00
SNG's: 4448.00
Tournaments: 498.00
Monthly Net Total: 4950.00
SNGs played: 301
ROI: 25.0%
$/Hour: $88.96

Those stats look pretty impressive right? I mean, other than the fact that I’m too much of a lazy pussy ass sloth to play more than 301 SNGs in a month. But if we look at my stats pre June 20th:

SNGs played: 180
ROI: 40.7%
$/Hour: $146.55

You can just imagine what the remaining 120 games were like. But even with a 25.0% ROI I am extremely happy, even though that is unsustainable in itself.

I imagine the month of July being less successful in terms of ROI and $/Hour, but more successful in terms of total $ earned, which is all that really matters anyways. I think I am becoming stronger at shrugging off losses, as well as forcing myself to continue playing when I am either up for the day or just bored. I still haven’t quite reached my 12k bankroll goal for my move up to the $119s, but when I do I will definitely make the leap. Lee676 has assured me that the caliber of play there is no better than the play at the 60s, it’s just that the swings are obviously larger in scale.

One last note, I ordered DoubleAs' long awaited book last night as well as the 3rd installment of Harrington on Hold’em. I’ve enjoyed reading DoubleAs blog for quite some time now and figured that his book may be an informative and entertaining read.

Alright that’s it.
